Spain Digital Nomad Visa for Americans and Latin Americans
Keep working remotely for your US or Latin American employer or clients — and live in Spain legally, with your family. It's one of the few Spanish residencies you can request from inside Spain if you entered legally.
Last reviewed: October 2026
Who this visa is for
- Employees who work 100% remotely for a company based outside Spain.
- Freelancers and self-employed professionals with mostly foreign clients — Spanish clients can be up to 20% of your work.
- People with a university degree, a vocational or business-school qualification, or at least 3 years of professional experience.
- Families: your spouse or partner, children and dependent parents can come with you — and they can work in Spain.
What you'll need
- Valid passport and no criminal record (certificates for the last 2 years from your countries of residence).
- Proof of at least 3 months working with your current employer or clients, and that the work can be done remotely.
- Your company must have been actively operating for at least 1 year.
- Income from your work of about €2,849/month (≈ €34,188/year), plus the extra amount for each family member.
- Health insurance: Spanish Social Security, or private insurance with no waiting periods or co-payments (travel insurance is not accepted).
- Spanish Social Security registration: through your employer, a certificate under a bilateral agreement (the US has one with Spain), or self-employed registration if you're a freelancer.
- Apostilled and sworn-translated documents where required.
How it works, step by step
From your country or from Spain?
From abroad, you apply for a visa at the Spanish consulate (decision in about 10 working days) and get 1 year, then switch to a residence permit in Spain. If you're already in Spain legally — for example, within your 90 visa-free days — you can apply directly to Spain's Large Companies Unit (UGE): the law sets a 20-day deadline, silence means approval, filing extends your legal stay while it's decided, and you get up to 3 years.

Digital Nomad Visa: common questions
How much income do I need for Spain's Digital Nomad Visa in 2026?
The requirement is 200% of Spain's minimum wage (SMI). With the 2026 SMI that's about €2,849 per month, or €34,188 a year. Add about €1,068/month for the first family member and €356/month for each additional one. We confirm the exact figure the authorities apply to your case.
Can I apply for the Digital Nomad Visa as a US tourist already in Spain?
Yes. If you're in Spain legally — for example within your 90 visa-free days — you can apply to the Large Companies Unit (UGE) from Spain. Filing extends your legal stay while the application is decided.
Can I work for Spanish clients?
Employees can only work for their foreign employer. Freelancers can have Spanish clients, as long as they're no more than 20% of their total work.
Can my family come and work in Spain?
Yes. Your spouse or partner, children and dependent parents can apply with you or later, and family members are allowed to work in Spain.
Does it count toward Spanish citizenship?
Yes. It's legal residence, so it counts toward long-term residence (5 years) and nationality — 2 years for citizens of Ibero-American countries, 10 years for most others, including US citizens.
Do I pay taxes in Spain?
If you live in Spain more than 183 days a year you'll usually become a Spanish tax resident. Some digital nomads can opt into the special 'Beckham Law' regime. Tax planning is case-specific — we coordinate with tax advisors.
