Digital Nomad vs Non-Lucrative Visa: which one is yours?
They're the two most popular routes for Americans and many Latin Americans — and the difference comes down to one question: will you keep working?

Quick rules of thumb
- You'll keep working remotely → Digital Nomad. Working on a Non-Lucrative is not allowed.
- You're retired or living on savings and want simplicity → Non-Lucrative.
- You're already in Spain legally and want to stay → Digital Nomad can be requested from here.
- Your partner wants to work in Spain → Digital Nomad: family members are allowed to work.

Digital Nomad vs Non-Lucrative: common questions
Can I switch from a Non-Lucrative to a Digital Nomad permit?
Time on a Non-Lucrative permit can't be used to prove prior remote work, but you may be able to apply for the Digital Nomad residence if you meet its requirements. We review the timing case by case.
Which one is easier to get?
If you have stable remote income, the Digital Nomad route is often faster — especially from inside Spain, with a 20-day legal deadline. If you have savings or a pension and won't work, the Non-Lucrative is simpler.
Which counts toward citizenship?
Both are legal residence and both count: 2 years for Ibero-American nationals, 10 for most others including US citizens.
